Roberto Garza, a 10th-year veteran, began the season as Chicago's starting left guard, but he underwent knee surgery in October and returned to his old spot, right guard, after the Bears shuffled some pieces on the front five heading into Week Nine. He has started 11 of the Bears' 13 games this season.
PFW caught up with Garza this week at Halas Hall and we discussed the Vikings' defensive line, the continuity in personnel on the offensive line and the development of the Bears' starting right tackle, rookie J'Marcus Webb.
PFW: You've already faced this Vikings defensive line once this season and know it very well. What's your scouting report on them?
Garza: It's a tough group. We have to be ready for another big challenge. These guys are going to be coming ready to play. We know how good they can be. As an offensive line we have to do our job — protect the quarterback and open those running lanes.
PFW: How much comfort is there between the offensive linemen now that the same five players have started at the same positions in every game since Week Nine?
Garza: We're still working on getting better. We still have a long way to go. We're comfortable in the fact that we've been able to play with each other. It's unique to have that kind of continuity in this league, but we're far from being where we need to be.
PFW: How far has J'Marcus Webb come since the season started, and do you have to help him out more during games because he's so young?
Garza: We just assumed he'd grow week-to-week and he's getting better. We're all getting better, so that's the main objective. We're always talking. If you're not talking as an offensive line, then you're not doing your job. I don't have to do anything extra (to help him). He's helping me out and I'm helping him out, so it's part of playing on the offensive line.
