The NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed to hold a formal bargaining session with both negotiating teams on Saturday in Dallas, the day before Super Bowl XLV.
According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith met Monday in New York to discuss "a range of issues related to a new CBA."
The two sides also agreed to a series of meetings over the next few weeks, involving formal bargaining sessions and smaller group meetings as they work for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement before the current one expires March 4.
The way we see it
While the two sides seem far from reaching a deal, this is a good sign of progress that they are making the effort to meet and negotiate. There won't be a new CBA any time soon, but a commitment to meeting and working on a new deal in the next few weeks at least increases the chances of having one in place by early March to avoid a lockout, although that still seems like a long shot.
