D'Aundre Reed didn't start regularly in college, but he was the third Arizona defensive end to be drafted this year. Reed rotated at one DE spot with Ricky Elmore, coming off the bench, but Reed might possess more athletic talent than his former teammate and has a chance to develop as a base end, says PFW draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki. Notes: Also threw discus as a California prep. Redshirted in 2006. Saw limited action in '07 and managed two tackles, half a tackle for loss and half a sack in eight games. Played only one of the first six contests while nursing a bruised tailbone. Was the Wildcats' third defensive end behind Brooks Reed and Ricky Elmore, a pair of all-conference performers. Played all 39 games his final three seasons (eight starts) — totaled 24-2½-1 with one batted pass and two forced fumbles in '08; 17-2½-0 in '09; and 40-6-2 with a batted pass in '10.
Positives: Looks the part with a rangy, athletic build. Uses his long arms to keep blockers out of his frame. Hustles in chase mode. Durable. Good strength — bench-pressed 225 pounds 30 times at the Combine. Showed explosion, posting a vertical leap of 35½ inches and a broad jump of 9 feet, 11 inches. Has some upside.
Negatives: Raw. Average eyes and instincts. Below-average speed. Lacks natural pass-rush skills. Not a skilled hands fighter to rip off blocks. Was neutralized by USC OT Tyron Smith. Played in a rotation and was never a full-time starter. Minimal production.
Summary: Rotated with Elmore and showed flashes of potential in part-time exposure but is not fast enough or athletic enough to operate from a two-point stance and will have to grow into an edge-stacking, 4-3 left end.
NFL projection: Late draftable pick.
