Bears release Harris, two others

The Bears announced Monday that they have released DT Tommie Harris, LB Hunter Hillenmeyer and OT Kevin Shaffer.

Harris, a three-time Pro Bowler, is coming off the least productive season of his career. He started 90 of the 104 games in which he played during his seven seasons in Chicago.

He was due a $2.5 million bonus on June 1.

Hillenmeyer, who had been with the Bears since 2003, was placed on injured reserve after Week One last season. He suffered a concussion in a preseason game and was apparently still dealing with the effects of it when the Bears decided to put him on I.R. Hillenmeyer served as the Bears' assistant player rep to the players' union and he has been involved with recent meetings on the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Shaffer started seven games at right tackle during his two seasons with the Bears.

The way we see it

The announcement didn't come as a surprise. There was speculation that all three could be released this offseason and the Bears trimmed about $9 million off the payroll by parting with them.
