The Jaguars announced Monday that they have re-signed QB Luke McCown, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. Length and terms of the contract were undisclosed.
McCown, 29, is entering his eighth season in the NFL. The former Louisiana Tech star spent time with Cleveland and Tampa Bay before joining the Jaguars via trade from the Buccaneers on Sept. 6, 2009.
The 6-4, 217-pound McCown has played in 16 career games with seven starts, including four games with the Jaguars. For his career, he has completed 154-of-260 passes for 1,739 yards with nine TDs and 10 interceptions.
He saw action in one game in 2010, against San Diego in Week Two in relief of an injured David Garrard. He completed 11-of-19 passes for 120 yards before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He played in two games for Jacksonville in ’09, attempting one pass.
The way we see it
Starter David Garrard was the only Jaguars quarterback under contract until Monday, so the re-signing of McCown is a wise move. GM Gene Smith is expected to select Garrard's successor in April's NFL draft, but having a reliable veteran like McCown at No. 2 on the depth chart allows the Jaguars to bring along a rookie at their own pace.
McCown's deal likely means QBs Trent Edwards and Todd Bouman will test the free-agent market whenever one exists.
