Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver proclaimed earlier this week that his team is still one or two years away from competing at the highest level.
And while that is likely true, it is in direct conflict with remarks Weaver made at his season-ending press conference, when he said, "I will tell you we will be in the playoffs next year, I don't think there's any doubt about it."
Weaver also indicated that head coach Jack Del Rio would not be back in 2012 if the team does not advance to the playoffs next season.
While the owner's waffling appears to open the door for a possible return by Del Rio in '12 even without a postseason trip next season, it is unlikely. Weaver essentially backed himself into a corner by not extending the contracts of Del Rio's staff this offseason. With all of the assistant coaches likely to bolt at the first chance of more job security, Del Rio would have a nearly impossible time trying to fill those vacancies given his lame-duck status.
The way we hear it, the '11 season — assuming, of course, there is a season — will decide Del Rio's fate in Jacksonville.
