Woodson to rejoin Kentucky as student assistant coach

Former University of Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson confirmed via text message Wednesday that he is returning to UK as a student assistant coach.

Woodson said he still has two semesters left to complete his bachelor's degree in kinesiology. This is his first trip into the world of coaching, and he could help tutor young Wildcats quarterbacks Morgan Newton, Maxwell Smith and Theltus "Bookie" Cobbins.

"I'm excited to be coming back," Woodson said in the text.

Woodson enjoyed a stellar career with the Wildcats, passing for 9,360 yards and a school-record 81 touchdowns from 2004-07. He led Kentucky to back-to-back bowl appearances as a junior and senior. He also broke Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel's single-season Southeastern Conference record for touchdown passes, throwing 40 in 2007.

Woodson was a sixth-round draft pick of the New York Giants in 2008, but he spent most of his time on the practice squad and never played in a game before being cut in September 2009. He was signed to the Washington Redskins' practice squad a day after being cut by the Giants, but he was released that November.
