Patriots No. 9 pick scouting report: DB Malcolm Williams, TCU

The Patriots spent their final pick of the 2011 NFL draft on another defensive back, Malcolm Williams, who admitted he was surprised to get the call. Williams will battle for a roster spot as a special-teams contributor. He is the college teammate of the team's fifth-round pick, OT Marcus Cannon, and said he can play corner, safety or return or block on special teams. Here is PFW draft expert Nolan Nawrocki's scouting report on Williams:

"A stocky, athletic developmental cornerback who clocked at 4.48 in the 40-yard dash at 5-9 5/8, 204 pounds and registered a 40-inch vertical jump, Williams has the physical tools to develop."

Watkins makes sense to Eagles

Danny Watkins, a former firefighter, landing in Philadelphia is just perfect. It's a high-character pick by a team that values such things. It's a high-value pick because you know what you are getting in the tough offensive lineman.

Does it concern you that Watkins is the same age as Kevin Kolb? It must be noted that the Eagles have done a lot of housecleaning of 30-something players the past few years. But Watkins has been extremely durable in his football career and could be a factor at one of three positions — tackle, guard or center.

When I talked to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg after the season, the first thing he said the offense needed to improve is pass protection. Some of that was on Mike Vick, but the line's performance dipped last season.

Andy Reid loves linemen, and he loves lunchpail linemen like Watkins. The kid will play any position the coaches want and will set a tone with his work ethic. People have complained that the Eagles do not run the ball enough, and though they still will be a 60-40 pass-run team, you can expect to see some third-and-1 rushes to go right behind Watkins' keister.

The Eagles are not done, folks. They are waiting to find out what is going to happen Friday morning with player trades, and Kolb is sure to be dealt when they can move him. The Cardinals have to be atop the list, and there is some evidence a deal might be in place already. The Eagles can find a quality cornerback or defensive linemen if the No. 38 pick is involved, with both Aaron Williams and Brandon Harris still on the board.

But as for Watkins, he has a lot of Logan Mankins in him, full of fire and brimstone, piss and vinegar. Eagles fans, trust me: You'll love the way he plays.

Judge Nelson denies NFL's request for stay

Updated at 10:09 a.m. ET, Thursday, April 28, 2011

According to an Associated Press report late Wednesday night, U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson denied the NFL's request to put her ruling that lifted the lockout on hold.

Nelson wrote that the league "has not met its burden for a stay pending appeal, expedited or otherwise."

The league and its owners had wanted the lockout to remain while they appeal Judge Nelson's ruling, with the argument that starting free agency and other football activities before the case has been clarified could be damaging to the competitive balance and operations of the league.

Reports indicate that Judge Nelson's decision does not dictate how the league should conduct business and what rules to use. It also doesn't obligate teams to extend contracts or sign players.

ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that Judge Nelson "ordered NFL to start its league year immediately, but said no team is obligated to sign free agents. Trades in question."

In its motion for a stay of Judge Nelson's ruling with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, the NFL argued, NFL.com reported Thursday, that "absent a stay, it will be impossible to restore the parties to their respective positions as of April 25, 2011, if this Court determines that the District Court's Order was in error. Nor would it be possible to unscramble the egg in terms of player transactions (trades, signings, cuts) that would occur in the interim."

On Thursday morning, NFL.com's Albert Breer wrote on Twitter that NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, when asked for an update on the league's position after Judge Nelson's latest ruling, told him: "Clubs notified last night they should continue to follow the current rules and practices until otherwise advised by our office."

Breer, again writing on Twitter Thursday morning, reported that Jeffrey Kessler and Jim Quinn, lawyers for the players, emailed players and agents this morning and informed them they hold the 2011 league year must begin immediately in the absence of a stay from the 8th Circuit.

"The NFL and the Clubs cannot collectively continue to refuse to deal with players," Kessler and Quinn wrote in the email, according to Breer, who quoted it on Twitter. "It is our view that the NFL (and) the Clubs will be in contempt of court if they do not comply with the order unless (and) until they hear differently from the 8th Circuit."

The way we see it

While it's waiting for the 8th Circuit Court to rule on if a stay will be granted, the league must consider setting up rules for free agency or risk being held in contempt for defying Judge Nelson's declaration that the league must open for business.

Many observers believe that the most realistic course of action would be to restore the rules that were in place for the 2010 league year. Whether that means that free agency begins immediately or within a few days has yet to be determined.

More clarity is expected to come Thursday.

Intriguing developmental prospects gain momentum

(Editor's note: Players are listed in alphabetical order.)

Every year, there are players that receive a lot of extra visits in the spring because they were not invited to the Combine or overlooked during the fall. Following are five who will be drafted and have begun to catch steam late in the draft process.

FS Chris Conte, California
For standing 6-2½, Conte is very lean at a shade under 200 pounds, but he does possess the length and movement skills to intrigue secondary coaches, who have taken a strong liking to the back-half defender and could push him up as high as the fourth round.

OT Johnny Culbreath, South Carolina State
Was recruited heavily coming out of high school and has the athletic ability to bend and move, clocking a 5.02 40 at 6-5 1/8, 322 pounds at his pro day. He has size, foot quickness and raw strength to anchor and seldom gets pushed back. Coaches who have worked him out have been very intrigued by his mid-round-caliber talent. The only concern is whether he will be able to handle the complexity of the NFL game, as he is too often late to react to what he sees and can be too easily short-circuited by the blitz.

WR Kris Durham, Georgia
At 6-5¼, 216 pounds, Durham clocked in the mid-4.4s at his pro day workout and made evaluators take notice of a player who stood out early in the season when A.J. Green was forced to sit out the first four games. He has a wide catching radius and good leaping ability to earn a spot as a possession receiver.

OT David Mims, Virginia Union
His arms measured an eighth of an inch short of 37 inches at his pro day and will give him the distinction of being the longest-armed pass protector in the NFL, with an Inspector Gadget-like reach. He is a developmental left tackle prospect who, at 6-8¼, 331 pounds, registered a 5.34 40-time and will draw interest in the late rounds for his upside.

FS Jonathan Nelson, Oklahoma
A developmental free safety who vertical-jumped 43 inches at his pro-day workout and broad-jumped 11-foot-4, Nelson's sheer athletic ability stands out in a very weak class of safeties and could allow him to push up as high as the fifth round.

Draft countdown: Pick No. 6

Overview: As a group, the players selected with the sixth pick in the draft have not been as impressive as many would expect with such a high pick. PFW found that the No. 6 pick, which is held this year by the Browns, has been extremely hit or miss in the past 10 years:

2010: Seahawks select Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung
Ankle injuries limited Okung as a rookie, but he is still widely expected to become one of the league's elite left tackles. He turned in an impressive performance against Bears DE Julius Peppers and started in Seattle's final seven games.

2009: Bengals select Alabama OT Andre Smith
A pair of foot injuries have limited Smith's chances to show what he can do. He made one start before injuring his foot in his rookie season. Last season, he had started three consecutive games before going on I.R. with a broken foot.

2008: Jets select Ohio State LB Vernon Gholston
Gholston never developed into the type of player he projected to be coming out of college and was cut by the Jets in early March. He made only five starts in three seasons with New York and failed to record a single sack.

2007: Redskins select LSU SS LaRon Landry
Landry jumped right into the mix his rookie season with Washington. He started all 16 games in '07 and had a career-high 95 tackles. He has been a productive safety over the course of his career with a knack for taking down the ballcarrier.

2006: 49ers select Maryland TE Vernon Davis
Davis started slow, but has really come into his own the past two seasons. Having not missed a game in three years, Davis' best season came in '09 when he reeled in 78 catches for 965 and 13 touchdowns, all career highs.

2005: Titans select West Virginia CB Adam Jones
Formerly known as "Pacman," Jones has become better known for his off-the-field troubles than his production on Sundays. He sat out the '07 and '09 seasons before joining the Bengals in '10. The once-promising player has made seven starts since '06.

2004: Browns select Miami (Fla.) TE Kellen Winslow
It took Winslow a little while to get going but he eventually did develop into a top-flight receiving tight end. He made the Pro Bowl in '07 with an 82-1,106-5 campaign and has caught five TD passes each of the past two seasons with the rising Buccaneers.

2003: Saints select Georgia DT Johnathan Sullivan
Sullivan made 12 starts in 14 games his rookie season in New Orleans, finishing the campaign with 34 tackles and one sack. That turned out to be his most productive season, as Sullivan was out of the league three years later.

2002: Chiefs select North Carolina DT Ryan Sims
Sims spent five seasons in Kansas City before being traded to the Buccaneers in '07. He played sparingly in Tampa Bay until '09, when he started all 16 games and recorded 33 tackles. He was released by the team midway through the '10 season.

2001: Patriots select Georgia DT Richard Seymour
It didn't take Seymour long to adjust to the NFL. After making 10 starts and three sacks his rookie season, Seymour went on to be become a perennial Pro Bowler (2002-06) and a defensive leader on three Super Bowl-champion teams in New England. He was traded to the Raiders in ’09 for a first-round pick (No. 17 in ’10).

Dolphins WR Marshall stabbed; wife arrested

Updated 3:15 p.m. ET Saturday, April 23, 2011

Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall was rushed to the intensive care unit of a South Florida hospital early Saturday morning after being stabbed with a knife. According to the police report, Marshall's wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall, admitted to stabbing her husband out of self defense.

Marshall's publicist, Denise White, said on her Twitter at 2:20 p.m. ET that Marshall had been released from the hospital and is "expected to make a full recovery."

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported, Marshall was "not in imminent danger" of dying. The incident allegedly was a result of a domestic dispute.

The police report stated that Marshall "provided sworn testimony advising that he slipped and fell onto a broken glass vase." But the area where the vase broke indicated no blood, and Nogami-Marshall "was read Miranda on scene wherein post Miranda she stated she stabbed the victim out of self defense."

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that Nogami-Marshall was arrested Friday by the Broward Sheriff's Office on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She was released after posting $7,500 bond.

"This is a very difficult time for Brandon and his family, thankfully he will make a full recovery. We simply ask during this time we respect his privacy," said Kennard McGuire, Marshall's agent, in a statement.

The Dolphins released the following statement: "We are aware of the report and our thoughts are with Brandon at this time. We will look into the matter but because we are not allowed to have any contact with any of our players, we will refrain from making any further coment."

Because of the current NFL lockout, the Dolphins' team doctor can see Marshall, and the team's trainer and doctor can consult with his doctors. The team can also "send wishes or other types of appropriate expressions of support," according to NFL Network's Albert Breer.

About 9:20 a.m. ET, Mike Sims-Walker, a former college teammate of Marshall's at UCF and a close friend of the Dolphins' wideout, tweeted that Marshall was going to be "ok and is in good spirits."

The 27-year-old wide receiver was traded to the Dolphins in April 2010 after four seasons playing with the Broncos, where he was selected to the Pro Bowl twice.

The incident is not the first off-field news Marshall has made since coming into the NFL. He has been arrested three times since being selected in the fourth round of the '06 draft, was suspended for part of the '09 preseason with Denver for conduct detrimental to the team. He was involved in the fight that led to the shooting death of former Broncos teammate, Darrent Williams, in 2006.

The draft's most instinctive performers

When it comes to identifying good football players, it is not always the biggest, strongest or fastest players who wind up becoming the best pros. Oftentimes, it is those that best understand the game of football and can read and react the quickest. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Jon Beason all were selected in the back of the first round out of Miami (Fla.) and did not have great "measurables," but they have all become elite, Pro Bowl performers because of their outstanding football playing instincts. Following are some players in this year's draft who could be anywhere from the back of the first round to the fifth, but stand out on tape for their terrific instincts and stand to become good, functional pros. Players are listed in alphabetical order:

DE Jeremy Beal, Oklahoma
A highly competitive, football-savvy pass rusher who times the snap well, is quick to diagnose, find the ball and flow to it. Beal clocked in the 5.1 range in the 40-yard dash, similar to Brandon Spikes a year ago and does not possess the long speed, athletic ability or explosion to impress in a workout in shorts. However, his instincts, hand use and point-of-attack strength stand out on tape. He runs 5.1, but thinks and reacts closer to 4.7 and although he could slide as low as the fifth round, he could become a solid, starting base end in the NFL.

OG Clint Boling, Georgia
Boling received some sixth-round grades during the season from stringent evaluators who did not see any "wow" factor and were turned off by his short arms. However, the less noticeable an offensive lineman shows up on tape, often the better, as the best offensive linemen often go unnoticed in getting the no-glamour job done. Boling is a very smart, quick learner with outstanding versatility, having proven capable of playing nearly every position on the line. He shows outstanding awareness reacting to stunts and blitzes, plays with great patience and understands leverage and angles. He should be able to step into a starting lineup immediately the way he did in college, fitting best inside in the pros but having enough length, smarts and athletic ability to handle pinching in as an emergency tackle.

WR Randall Cobb, Kentucky
Cobb can be described as small at 5-10 1/4, 191 pounds, but he packs a lot of punch in his small frame and shows up in a big way on the football field. He excels reading coverages, sifting through zones and has a very natural feel for the game, shiftily slicing through defenses and piling up yardage in chunks. He plays the game with great intensity, is highly competitive and has a chance to become an impact performer in the pros.

CB Brandon Harris, Miami (Fla.)
When Harris measured less than 5-foot-10 at the NFL Scouting Combine, his draft stock immediately took a big hit, as many teams will not draft a cornerback under the threshold out of principle, given the history of small corners struggling to match up in the NFL. However, like Brandon Flowers, who bolted Virginia Tech early three years ago, Harris will prove to be an exception to the rule. He could struggle to match up against length, but he plays bigger than his size, is very football-smart and plays with great awareness. The son of a coach, Harris will make a living in the NFL in the slot, a position that has grown increasingly significant as offenses such as the Packers and Patriots have spread out the field with five-receiver sets.

SS Jaiquawn Jarrett, Temple
Jarrett is not big or fast and clocked as slow as 4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the Combine, the slowest of any of the nine free safeties at the event. He lacks great range over the top and will have some man-coverage limitations in the pros. However, he is very field-fast, plays with great awareness, is quick to drop down in the box and seldom is fooled against the run or pass. Forget his 30-inch vertical jump and pedestrian 40-time — he is a physical hitter, plays much bigger than his size and plays faster than he times. He instantly will become a productive special-teams performer and earn a starting job as a box safety.

After WR Armanti Edwards' very disappointing rookie season, the Panthers' decision to trade their 2011 second-round pick — which ended up being the 33rd overall choice — to be in position to take him in the third round last year has been second-guessed, even by former head coach John Fox. Fox had little use for Edwards, playing him in only three games, but we hear Fox's successor, Ron Rivera, has a much more optimistic outlook on Edwards' future. Carolina hired former NFL WR Ricky Proehl as an offensive consultant this offseason and he's expected to work closely with Edwards and try to help him become a weapon in the slot. Edwards had a lot to digest last season, transitioning from playing quarterback at Appalachian State, and Carolina might try to simplify things for him this year after he was overwhelmed by trying to learn all three receiver positions last year, we're told. He might not get much time to work with Proehl and the rest of the staff, however, with the lockout lingering.

17 in ’10).

When production does not meet talent

The "underachiever" label is commonly slapped on players whose production does not meet their physical talent. The following players have the potential to be terrific NFL pros, but for it to happen, they must realize that they have coasted too much on their raw traits. They also must learn that they are no longer on scholarship and work much more diligently at their craft than they did in college to realize their potential. Players are listed in alphabetical order:

DE Christian Ballard, Iowa
Ballard has first-round athletic talent, clocking in the low 4.7s at his pro day at 286 pounds and vertical-jumping 34 inches, but on tape, it’s the overachieving Karl Klug who stands out much more often for his effort and hustle. Ballard left a lot of production on the field and too often plays small. After electing not to perform the bench-press test at the NFL Scouting Combine, he mustered only 16 reps at his pro day, indicating to evaluators that his work ethic in the weight room is not what it should be. He now is regarded as more of a third-round developmental talent than the first-rounder he flashed signs of being at the Senior Bowl. He has double-digit-type sack potential and instead finished with just three, and his production dropped considerably from a year ago. Teams are concerned that he has been too complacent just going through the motions.

OT Joseph Barksdale, LSU
A three-year starter in the Southeastern Conference, Barksdale possesses raw, brute strength and proved capable of holding ihs own. However, he plays way too passively, does not use his hands and shows no urgency in his play. The reason for his soft football temperament, many evaluators believe, is his lack of motivation, questionable work ethic and "frat" lifestyle. He is too much of a follower, easily distracted off the field and had a number of run-ins in college — including suffering a broken jaw at the hands of a teammate and a Twitter outburst — that have teams concerned about his maturity level. Based on his physical traits he could warrant looks in the third round, but it's also possible he slips to the back of the draft because of make-up concerns.

OLB Justin Houston, Georgia
When he wants to come off the edge with power, Houston clearly can, and it’s not easy to stop him at 6-3, 270 pounds moving at 4.64 speed (in the 40-yard dash). He has legitimate pass-rush potential when his hand is on the ground and he is flying at the snap. The greatest concerns that evaluators have is that he too often plays down to the level of competition. Watch him against Idaho State when he could have easily piled up five sacks and he packed it in and appeared to be saving himself for Auburn. When he is playing off the ball or asked to read and react, he is late to find it. Also, concerns still remain about his early-season suspension in 2009.

DT Terrell McClain, South Florida

McClain's pro-day workout was one of the best in the country. He looked like a young Warren Sapp going through drills, but his tape does not come close to matching. In three years as a starter, he has never recorded more than three sacks in a season. He’s not known as a worker. His toughness, effort and competitiveness are questionable. He easily loses focus and has been too much of a flash player throughout his career. He could warrant interest as early as the second round, but he will require a demanding position coach to maximize his potential and overcome the "underachiever" label.

MLB Martez Wilson, Illinois

On paper, Wilson looks like a first-round pick — he’s nearly 6-4, 250 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in the mid-4.4s. Throw on tape of him, however, and he thinks and reacts much closer to a player who runs a 4.8 40-time. He’s extremely tight-hipped, shows too much stiffness in his body and most of his production is uncontested with free lanes to the ball. He does not play to his size, struggles to clear his way through congestion and almost always seems to be in a delayed trail position instead of instinctively reading and reacting. Wilson projects as a second-round pick in a weak LB class, but grades out like an NFL backup on tape and stands to be considerably overdrafted.
