Portis wants to return, but do Redskins want him?

RB Clinton Portis told media members this week that he's not done, but you have to wonder what, if any, his role would be in Washington in 2011. Portis has played in only 13 games the past two seasons and is owed more than $8 million next season. With the relative emergence of Ryan Torain, Portis will not return to D.C. as a featured back. He also will turn 30 prior to next season, and Portis had a Herculean workload early in his career that started his downturn when he was 28. Torain is a big, hard runner with surprising juice, but he too has been injury-prone in his career. Although Keiland Williams has had some moments this season, he might not ever be more than a complementary piece. Portis could come back if he's willing to accept a steep pay cut and a third-down type of role, where his fine pass blocking could be valuable, but it's not clear whether he would swallow his pride and do that. If not, add running back to the list of positions the Redskins must address in the offseason.

Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast

Pat Fitzmaurice is addicted to competitive cooking shows ("Top Chef," "Chopped," Hell's Kitchen," etc.), and he also loves to eat. Since he isn't much of a cook, he's channeling his chef obsession into Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast, a regular column featuring an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. Bon appétit.

This column typically dishes up four courses per week. But with most fantasy leagues done for the season, we're going to make this a New Year's Day buffet, with an emphasis on 2011 fantasy drafts:

— The No. 1 pick in next year's fantasy drafts? Hmmm. It's probably safe to say that we'll enter 2011 without a consensus No. 1. But as of now, I'd go with Arian Foster. He's looked phenomenal this season, and I give him an edge over Adrian Peterson simply because Foster has fewer miles on his odometer. Chris Johnson and Jamaal Charles are a notch below Foster and Peterson. Not a bad encore for Johnson this year after his unmatchable 2009 performance. Charles might be in the running for the top spot if not for Todd Haley's proclivity to limit Charles' carries and give goal-line carries to others.

— I was buying a bag of Cheez-Its from a vending machine when the Michael Vick bandwagon left the station earlier this season. It took me awhile to come around on Vick's legitimacy, but I eventually did. That said, there's no way I'd spend a first-round pick on him in a 2011 fantasy draft. Too streaky. Too susceptible to injury. And, yes, fair or not, I still have lingering concerns about Vick's character. If you think character has no place in a fantasy football discussion, you might want to have a word with a 2010 Randy Moss owner. For all the upside Vick offers, could you really draft him ahead of a money-in-the-bank guy like Peyton Manning?

— One more thought on Vick: I worry that he's Kordell Stewart, Part II. Here are Stewart's 1997 numbers in 16 starts: 3,020 passing yards, 21 TD passes, 476 rushing yards, 11 TD runs. Stewart's 1998 numbers in 16 starts: 2,560 passing yards, 11 TD passes, 406 rushing yards, two TD runs. If you think a Vick-Stewart comparison is apples to oranges, fair enough. But I wouldn't discount the possibility of a similarly dramatic drop-off.

— As much love as Matt Ryan gets from the TV analysts, he's a long way from becoming a top quarterback, particularly a top fantasy quarterback. Among quarterbacks with at least 210 passing attempts, Ryan currently ranks 28th in yards per passing attempt. Ryan averages 6.44 yards per attempt, putting him behind the likes of Mark Sanchez (6.49), Alex Smith (6.69) and Chad Henne (6.81). Yards per attempt isn't a flawless stat - Peyton Manning only ranks 20th in that category - but it's telling nonetheless. Ryan is more a game manager than playmaker, and I suspect that his upside is more limited than the pro-Ryan crowd believes. For 2011, I'd rather have Josh Freeman as my starting fantasy quarterback.

— Matt Forté has quietly had a nice fantasy season, albeit a streaky one. If the Bears make needed upgrades along their offensive line this offseason, Forté could be a top-10 running back next season.

— Some of the new blood at wide receiver will make for interesting debate leading up to next year's fantasy drafts. As an example, answer this question: Whom would you rank higher for next season - Reggie Wayne or the Buccaneers' Mike Williams? Is Wayne a no-brainer choice? I'm not so sure. Yeah, he plays with Peyton Manning, and a 1,200-yard season seems like a foregone conclusion. But Williams has 10 TD catches this season, compared with Wayne's five. Wayne has a sizeable edge in receptions and receiving yardage. But he's also going to turn 33 next November. Williams will be 24 next season.

— Assuming that Randy Moss is still in the league next year, it will be fascinating to see where he goes in fantasy drafts. Some will write him off completely; others will see major rebound potential. While it will be tempting to join the write-him-off camp, I'm not sure I can. He'll be 34 next season. Terrell Owens just turned 37 and was highly productive when healthy this year. And as dismal a season as Moss had, he still caught five TD passes, which is as many as Reggie Wayne and Larry Fitzgerald currently have. Moss might have another big season or two left in him. He might also sulk his way out of football. Who knows?

— Knowshon Moreno's 2010 numbers aren't terribly impressive, but he was a beast over the second half of the season, at least until he got hurt. He'll probably go lower in next year's drafts than he should.

— I plan to draft Kenny Britt in at least one league next year and possibly in several. He's a gem when healthy. And if the Titans find a real quarterback in the offseason, look out.

— This was a tough season for rookie running backs. But injuries were at least partly to blame for the disappointing rookie seasons that Ryan Mathews and Jahvid Best had. They'll both obviously go later in 2011 drafts than they did in 2010, so both will have interesting profit potential.

— Can't wait to see what Stevie Johnson does for an encore next season. He came out of nowhere to put up big numbers this season. The Bills figure to be a team in flux next season, but Johnson will no doubt be a centerpiece of the offense, and despite his breakout year, I suspect he'll be drafted later than he should be in a lot of leagues.

— It will be interesting to see where DeAngelo Williams lands next season, and it will be interesting to see what the Panthers do with their running backs. I've turned into a big Mike Goodson fan. Even if Jonathan Stewart is dubbed the main man, Goodson still figures to play a significant role.

— Saints TE Jimmy Graham and Titans TE Jared Cook really came on at the end of the year. With their potential, they figure to be ranked ahead of some members of the old guard at tight end for next year. Are they top-10 tight ends for next year? Cook, no. Graham, maybe.

That's all for this year, dear readers. Thanks for a fun season. Looking forward to doing it all over again next year. Keep your fingers crossed for a quick NFL labor agreement.

John Clay: Hartline's rookie mistake puts Joker in tough spot

All season, Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline had performed with the poise and savvy of a fifth-year senior.

Then, less than a month before his final college game, in the early hours of Friday morning, the fifth-year senior made a rookie mistake.

According to the police report, Hartline and 20-year-old Ashley Kathleen Carnes, a UK cheerleader, were arrested on public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges after authorities were called to a disturbance outside a house on Crescent Avenue.

Apparently, the incident began as a group was in a taxi returning from The Tin Roof bar. An argument started. The report says Hartline was allegedly "screaming and cursing at the witness."

The report includes allegations Hartline and Carnes both hit their female accuser, but police declined to file charges against either party.

UK's Cobb named AP first-team All-American

Randall Cobb has yet to decide whether he'll enter the NFL Draft or return to the University of Kentucky for his senior season, but if Wildcats fans have seen the last of the talented junior wide receiver at least they'll know they witnessed something rare.

Cobb's unique abilities were recognized Tuesday with one of college football's highest honors when the Alcoa, Tenn., native was named a first-team All-American by The Associated Press.

Cobb filled the all-purpose position on a 25-member All-America first team led by Heisman Trophy-winning junior quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn.

Cobb became the 11th Wildcat to be named to the AP's first team and the first since kick returner Derek Abney in 2002.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Cobb beat out second-team all-purpose selection Damaris Johnson of Tulsa and third-team choice Denard Robinson of Michigan for the honor.

Mark Story: UK-U of L likely to be Basketbrawl, part two

Fast-break points for the countdown to Armageddon:

21. Last year's Kentucky-Louisville men's basketball game. The coaches seemed to have the players more primed to brawl than ball. There was a malevolent air that did not do credit to basketball in our state.

Here's why I expect something similar Friday.

20. Kentucky's playing rotation. UK is basically a six-man team with all its top six players playing 24 minutes or more a game, and five playing 28 minutes or more.

19. Louisville's playing rotation. Not including Monday night's meeting with Morgan State, Louisville had 10 players averaging at least 10 minutes a game and only one player (Preston Knowles at 25.4) playing more than 23 a contest.

John Clay: Co-coordinator idea could work for Cats

Conventional wisdom says Steve Brown is oh, so outta here.

It also says the co-coordinator concept can't work, not when a man who was coordinator of an SEC defense has a hyphen attached to his title and an alarming alteration made to his job description.

Scout's Notebook: Redskins QB Rex Grossman

QB Rex Grossman
Washington Redskins

Height: 6-1 Weight: 236 Speed: 5.29

Notes: Married. Grandfather played briefly for the Baltimore Colts and father played at Indiana. Parade All-American and state offensive player of the Year as an Indiana prep. Redshirted in 1999. Playing in head coach Steve Spurrier's offense, Grossman started 31-of-35 games over the course of 2000-02, completing 677-of-1,110 pass attempts for 9,164 yards with 77 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. Finished second in the '01 Heisman Trophy balloting after being named AP National Player of the Year and a finalist for three other major awards. A three-time All-Southeastern Conference selection, Grossman established 18 UF passing records before opting to forgo his senior season. Was drafted by the Bears in the first round (22nd overall) of the '03 draft. Over six seasons in Chicago (2003-08), started 31-of-36 games in which he played and totaled 518-953-6,131-33-35 (54.4). Tore a tendon in his right (throwing) middle finger in the '03 season finale, suffered a season-ending ruptured right ACL in September '04 and broke his left ankle during the '05 preseason, allowing Kyle Orton to take over the job. Reclaimed starting spot in '06 (made 16 starts), but was benched in favor of Brian Griese in '07 and backed up Orton in '08. Was not tendered as an unrestricted free agent and signed with the Texans in '09 — completed 3-9-33-0-1 (33.3) in one appearance. Has started 2-of-3 games in which he has played for the Redskins this season, managing 48-89-548-5-3 (53.9).

Positives: Has a very strong arm and a quick delivery that he can hasten in the pocket. Can fit the ball into tight windows and drill the deep out. Fires the ball downfield and can create explosive big plays. Is very confident. Gritty and meshes well with the offensive line. Carries a swagger and has a strong on-field presence. Highly competitive and wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. Can take hard coaching, has learned to become a better student of the game and work at his craft.

Negatives: Is short and throws wide-based, lowering his release point. Struggles to find throwing lanes in the pocket behind the Redskins' tall O-line, resulting in too many batted balls. Has small hands and consistently botches the center-snap exchange and loses the ball, as he did on Halloween to lose against Detroit. Risky decision maker with a riverboat gambler approach — has a subpar 38-39 career TD-interception ratio and is too careless with the ball. Very marginal escapability against the rush — takes a lot of hits as a result, increasing the risk of injury. Does not step into his throws, short-arms the ball and fires too much off his back foot, affecting ball placement and diminishing his accuracy. Struggles to take pace off the ball and throw with touch long and short. Very suspect durability.

Summary: The Redskins have attempted to move Grossman outside the pocket on play-action and bootleg passes to create throwing lanes and compensate for his lack of height and field vision. However, he has zero foot quickness, can be tracked down like he is stuck in mud, and his mechanics fall apart the more he is asked to move. Operates best out of the gun and needs a strong offensive line and receivers who will attack the ball in the air to function. Careless decision making, marginal accuracy and poor escapability will always be restricing. Is too short and slow-footed to stay healthy, and durability issues make him most ideally suited for a relief role. A capable backup with no upside, Grossman has proven too inconsistent and injury-prone to handle a starting job in any type of offense.

UK fans showed Hansbrough his act wasn't cute

Playing well against Kentucky? A pardonable sin. But to enjoy playing well against UK? Unforgivable.

That seemed to be the message when UK fans in Freedom Hall Wednesday night rained boos down on Notre Dame's Ben Hansbrough. He drew the ire of fans by preening after each shot he made.

(Of course, DeMarcus Cousins regularly enjoyed his fine play for UK last season, most memorably by pretending to talk on the phone at Mississippi State. But that was colorful.)

When contacted on Friday, Hansbrough said he meant no offense.

"I have nothing but respect for Kentucky's fan base," he said. "I was just out there having a good time."

No need to postpone game due to snow

So here I sit in my hotel room in downtown Philadelphia, enjoying the Sunday early kicks and preparing to work the sidelines for tonight's Westwood One radio broadcast of the Sunday-night game between the Vikings and Eagles when my phone rings. "Say that again," I respond to the caller. "I'm staying until Tuesday night — Tuesday, you said — because it's snowing and it's kind of cold out?" Through my shock I have to ask, "This is a pro football game we're talking about, right?"

Admittedly, I have a stake in this one. No offense, Philly friends, you have a lovely city here, but getting snowbound at the Downtown Marriott for 48 hours because the NFL didn't want to play this one in the snow is not what I signed up for. Still, I know how blessed I am to have the incredible job I do. Stuff happens, and there are many with a lot worse deals than I'm getting here, so this is absolutely not being written just to fill my need to whine a bit and pretend I've got things tough. I know how lucky I am.

This is about the answers we're all entitled to. When did the NFL stop playing its games in bad weather? For what possible reason could we be waiting until Tuesday night to play this game instead of Monday? And how could this be any less fair to the Vikings and Eagles?

My first big surprise came when I got to my hotel room at about 11 p.m. on Christmas night and turned on the local news to hear Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter warning all the locals about the serious winter storm due to arrive in Philly early Sunday afternoon. Various weather Web sites Friday evening forecasted temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s with a 20 percent chance of precipitation. When I heard Mayor Nutter talking about 12-15 inches of snow and 35- to 50-mile-an-hour winds, I figured, OK, guess I didn't pack very well, but it never occurred to me they'd postpone the game — it's a football game.

At noon on Sunday, the local Philadelphia news was reporting the city was worried about the problems the crowd might confront at Lincoln Financial Field but that it was fully prepared to put the game on and any decision to postpone it was the NFL's. So the same league that a week earlier, with a full week to make a decision, forced the Vikings to play outside in Minneapolis in dangerous weather conditions rather than move the game to an indoor venue postpones this game because ...? This game should have been played in the conditions God gave us to play it in, exactly as the NFL has done for years.

Why Tuesday night? I suspect we'll be told it's about the city's need to clean up on Monday once the weather calms down, but my sources tell me that's just window dressing. It seems NBC may have been none too happy about losing its Sunday-night prime-time matchup between Michael Vick and Adrian Peterson, knowing its first 15 broadcasts are among the 20 most-watched TV shows of the year, and that a Monday-night showdown with the Falcons and Saints would depress those ratings dramatically. I think the network pitched a billions-of-dollars-a-year-in-rights-fees fit, it won, and the Vikes and Eagles got screwed.

The Vikings' season is over, but this is now the third week in a row their game has been either postponed, moved or both due to the weather. The Giants game was unavoidable, the Bears game could have been handled better and this Eagles game is really inexcusable. Les Frazier is a good man coaching for his professional life, but you have to ask: How can he possibly be fairly evaluated under these circumstances?

The Eagles are playing for an NFC East title and possibly a bye in the first round. They will now sit around and get stale for 48 hours and then finish the season with a rivalry game against the Cowboys, minus the two days to prepare that have been stolen from them. The handicap they've now been handed, for reasons completely foreign to everything we've come to love and know about the NFL, and the resultant advantage it creates for the Giants and all the other teams they're competing with for a playoff spot, as well as whomever they might eventually face if they play in the first week of the playoffs, is just wrong.

This column was originally published in the current print edition of Pro Football Weekly, dated Jan. 2, 2011, which also includes feature stories on Defensive Player of the Year candidate and Steelers OLB James Harrison and how a group of proven veterans hope to lead the Jets' quest for playoff glory, as well as previews of all Week 17 games, columnists and insights into the upcoming NFL draft, handicapping and fantasy football. Tough defense earns playing time from Calipari

When Kentucky freshman Stacey Poole took a turn applying single-minded defense on Notre Dame shooter Ben Hansbrough, he earned a promotion. His three-pointer in the same game, the only shot he's made this season, was purely coincidental when Coach John Calipari said Poole would be the second perimeter player off the bench.

Then UK played Indiana, a game that saw Poole nearly match his season's total of four shots by launching three times in seven frantic minutes. Not so coincidentally, he never got off the bench in the next game as the Cats beat Mississippi Valley State last weekend.

"I was just hyped up to play," Poole said of the quick-draw act that earned him a return to the bench.

A wiser Poole noted Tuesday that Calipari did not make an issue of the itchy trigger finger against Indiana. Another play drew the UK coach's attention as a teachable moment.

"I was on the backside and I didn't come help," Poole said. "That's what he was really mad about. It wasn't really the shots I took, but the one play I didn't help my other teammates."

Whitehurst to start for Seattle in Week 17

Charlie Whitehurst has started only once in his five-year NFL career. Start No. 2 will come in one of the most important games of the entire 2010 season.

The Seahawks announced Monday that Whitehurst will start in Week 17 vs. the Rams. The winner of the matchup, which was flexed into prime time, will win the NFC West and host a wild-card playoff game.

Whitehurst has played in four games this season because of injuries to Matt Hasselbeck. Seattle's normal starter suffered a hip bruise in the Week 16 loss to Tampa Bay. Head coach Pete Carroll said that Hasselbeck may be able to play some in the game vs. St. Louis, but the team was more comfortable with Whitehurst starting.

On the season, Whitehurst has completed 35-of-63 passes for 315 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

The way we see it

The Seahawks are in a tough spot with their quarterbacks heading into this must-win game, as neither Whitehurst nor Hasselbeck has been very impressive. If they had a choice, they'd likely prefer the veteran to get the start, but the hip injury could limit his practice and preparation time. Whitehurst will need to play his best game of the season to help Seattle advance into the postseason.

Pair of punt calls cost Jets

The Jets clinched a playoff spot on Sunday afternoon in Chicago, but not in the manner in which they were hoping. About 30 minutes after the final seconds elapsed in the Bears' 38-34 victory, Redskins PK Graham Gano drilled a 31-yard field goal, lifting Washington over the Jaguars, locking up a second consecutive postseason appearance for New York. Jets players and coaches called the day "bittersweet," as the disappointment of losing was overshadowed by accomplishing a major team goal for the season.

The playoff berth could have been taken care of in a more straightforward fashion had it not been for some questionable play-calls and costly mistakes by the Jets. For the past month, the team has struggled to string together consecutive productive quarters and that was never more evident than in the loss to the Bears. The Jets followed a nearly perfect second quarter, where they outscored Chicago 24-7, with an equally horrible third period, which cost them the lead and game. A team can get lucky in the way they enter the playoffs, but once the second season begins, better execution and talent tends to win out.

The PFW Spin

Coming out of the locker room at halftime, the Jets led 24-17 and seemed to have momentum on their side. QB Mark Sanchez had played a nearly flawless first half despite an injured shoulder and RB Shonn Greene was wearing down the physical Bears defense. With dangerous returner Brad Smith back to receive the second-half kickoff, New York looked to extend its lead and force Chicago to play from behind, a role the Bears have not thrived in very much this season. But a pair of poor coaching calls halted the Jets in their tracks.

The first came at the end of the Jets' first drive of the third quarter, when facing a 4th-and-3 from their own 40, head coach Rex Ryan sent out P Steve Weatherford. There was a bit of a twist, however, as the Jets kept Sanchez on the field in the role of punt protector.

Of course the snap never reached Weatherford, as the play was for Sanchez to throw to gunner Brad Smith. Bears special-teams ace Rashied Davis recognized the starting QB on the field, sniffed out the play and broke up the pass, giving Chicago the ball back in Jets territory. On the very next play, Bears QB Jay Cutler hit WR Johnny Knox for a 40-yard bomb, tying the game at 24.

From then on, the Jets decided to just punt the ball on fourth down, which was the second poor coaching choice. All week leading up to the game, Ryan and special-teams coach Mike Westhoff claimed they were not going to kick to the most dangerous man in football, Bears PR Devin Hester. But after the botched fake, everything seemed to change. It cost the Jets dearly, when the drive following Knox's TD again forced New York to punt. Weatherford booted it deep, but right into the waiting arms of Hester. The returner brought it back 38 yards to the Jets' 32; three plays later Cutler found Hester in the endzone for a 25-yard TD pass.

Both poor coaching calls were results of either cockiness or clouded thinking. There is a time and a place for a fake punt, and at the start of the half with the ball at the 40 is neither a bad time nor place. But if the Jets wanted Sanchez on the field, they should have just run a standard offensive play. No opponent is actually going to think that the starting QB is lined up to block for the punter, and Davis said after the game he knew the Jets would throw there when he saw Sanchez in the backfield. New York would have been better served pinning the Bears deep in that situation and letting their defense hold the lead.

Punting to Hester was a mistake on multiple levels, as the record-setting return ace was just waiting to break a big play after he'd been avoided all afternoon. As soon as he hit the seam, the Jets were regretting their decision, and their anger was only compounded when Hester beat Drew Coleman for a touchdown catch a minute later. Ryan told reporters afterward it was a breakdown in communication that led to Weatherford punting in the direction of Hester.

Breakdowns on two third-quarter punt calls can cost a team a game, as the Jets proved on Sunday. Now that they are officially in the playoffs, they can't afford to have that happen again.

UK Football Notebook: Coaching additions all but official

It won't be official until early next week, but it looks as though Kentucky Coach Joker Phillips has filled two vacancies on his coaching staff.

Rick Minter and Steve Pardue were both present at UK's practice on Saturday, standing on the field observing drills. UK confirmed last week that running backs coach Larry Brinson and safeties coach Chris Thurmond were no longer on the staff and that a new defensive assistant would be hired to serve as co-defensive coordinator with Steve Brown.

Phillips said the school can't announce a hiring until a vacant job is posted for seven days. Two assistant coaching positions were posted on UK's Web site on Tuesday. For now, Phillips refers to Minter and Pardue as "temporary" employees.

"We'll talk about the new coaches when the time comes," Phillips said. "The hiring process takes a few days. We've got some 'temp' (temporary) guys working for us right now, some high-paid temp guys."

Both Minter and Pardue have a history with Phillips. Minter was head coach at the University of Cincinnati from 1994-2003, and Phillips served on his staff in 1997 and 1998.

Eric Mangini hot-seat meter: Hot

A three-game December losing streak has speculation about head coach Eric Mangini's future becoming the dominant story line surrounding the Browns as Cleveland prepares for its regular-season finale vs. Pittsburgh.

Team president Mike Holmgren wlll evaluate Mangini, who is 10-21 in two seasons in Cleveland, at season's end. On Monday, Mangini was asked if he was curious to know of Holmgren's thoughts about him.

"What did someone tell me one time? 'Don't worry about the future — it comes soon enough,' " Mangini said.

Added Mangini, "What I really want, what I really want, is to beat Pittsburgh. That's what I really want. I can't be more sincere than that. Pittsburgh is a huge game whether it's the first game against Pittsburgh or the second game against Pittsburgh, it's Pittsburgh, and that's what I want to do.

"... I want the guys to have a great week of practice and go out and thump, beat Pittsburgh."

We've heard Mangini's ability to stay focused during trying times is something that distinguishes him, and if ever there was a week for him to have tunnel vision, it was this one. With the Browns closing out their schedule and recording double-digit losses for a third consecutive season, the Browns' plans for 2011, and whether those include Mangini, are what's left to discuss.

UK announces hirings of Minter, Pardue

Rick Minter and Steve Pardue were officially announced as the two newest members of Kentucky Coach Joker Phillips' staff on Thursday.

Minter will serve as co-defensive coordinator with Steve Brown, and Pardue will coach running backs.

Phillips has an extensive history with both coaches. In 1997, Phillips coached wide receivers and in 1998 coached defensive backs for Minter at the University of Cincinnati. Minter coached at UC from 1994-2003 and has the most wins in the program's history.

Other current head coaches who were on Minter's staff at UC include New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan, Baltimore Ravens Coach John Harbaugh, Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin and Florida State Coach Jimbo Fisher.

"Rick is a tough, hard-nosed defensive coordinator who has put together outstanding defenses at numerous schools," Phillips said in a release.

Calipari voices frustration with Jones' growing pains

Terrence Jones had as many turnovers (two) and fouls (two) as he did points (four) and rebounds (none) at halftime against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night.

That just won't do for a player Kentucky counts on to be its low-post anchor on a consistent basis and go-to guy in clutch situations.

"Terrence has got to play," UK Coach John Calipari said after the 85-60 victory. "Those numbers, I mean, how do you start the game this way?

"In a league game, a big game, kind of like North Carolina, you can't do that. It's important that we have everybody come and play."

Calipari was unimpressed that Jones finished the game as UK's leading scorer with 19 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds. "He has some numbers," Calipari said as he glanced at the boxscore. "But they're not real."

Calipari asks for more out of Miller

His father has a catchy way of describing how wing Darius Miller contributes to Kentucky's success.

"He's a stat stacker," Brian Miller said after his son's 14 points, three rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals helped UK beat Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night.

The problem is Kentucky Coach John Calipari wants that stack much higher.

"He goes for 14 (points) and five assists, 5-for-5 from the line," Calipari said after the game. "And I'm saying he's better than that. That's how much I believe in him."

So why isn't Miller's stack much higher?

UK notes: Vargas asserts himself

In the fading minutes of Kentucky's 89-52 victory over Winthrop Wednesday, backup center Eloy Vargas rebounded a missed shot. He bulled (sort of) his way to a put-back basket while contact contorted his body.

The Rupp Arena crowd roared as the willowy big man continued to flex a bit of muscle. A big grin spread across UK Coach John Calipari's face.

"Maybe he sees some light now (about) how he's got to play," Calipari said. "He finally performed.

"And, believe me, confidence is demonstrated performance. It's not what I say (or) what I want him to do. It's you've got to demonstrate it to yourself and your teammates on the court. And he did it today."

After UK's last game, Calipari said Vargas grabbed rebounds in traffic for the first time. Against Winthrop, he scored a season-high eight points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked a season-high three shots.

Calipari: Cats not on easy street

Teams traditionally soften up the schedule when final exams and the Christmas holidays can distract players. Kentucky is playing Mississippi Valley State, Winthrop, Coppin State in its next three games.

None of those three opponents has a Ratings Percentage Index better than Winthrop's No. 153.

But don't try to tell UK Coach John Calipari that he shouldn't be gulping down the valium because Kentucky has an easy series of upcoming games.

"You say that," he told a reporter on Friday. Then Calipari noted that Mississippi Valley State, which faces UK on Saturday, played Georgia to a two-point game on Nov. 12. (He left out that Georgia's best player, Trey Thompkins, did not play in that game.)

As he did before Kentucky beat East Tennessee State by 23 and Portland by 31 and Boston U by 34, Calipari noted a queasy feeling induced by the possibility of an upset.

Minter will be in charge of UK defense, Phillips says

Upon announcing last week that Steve Brown and Rick Minter would share the title of co-defensive coordinator on his Kentucky football staff, head coach Joker Phillips never explained how such an arrangement would work.

Saturday, he did, saying "somebody has to be in charge" of the defense, and that somebody will be Minter.

Brown, the team's defensive coordinator for three years under former coach Rich Brooks and this season under Phillips, was not available for comment Saturday, but Phillips and Minter offered details about the new arrangement.

Phillips, who was an assistant under Minter at the University of Cincinnati in the 1990s, said he expects Brown to remain on the staff.

"It's been done many times," Phillips said. "I had a chance to visit with (Oklahoma Coach) Bob Stoops, who has co-coordinators on his staff.

Warford, a Madison Central graduate, has allowed one sack this season and leads the team in knockdown blocks with 43.

Three-and-out with Patriots radio color commentator Gino Cappelletti

Each week we'll talk to former Patriots star and current broadcaster Gino Cappelletti. This week, Gino talked about the impacts that NT Vince Wilfork and CB Devin McCourty are having on the defense and why the Patriots excel in the snow.

PFW: How important has NT Vince Wilfork's play been this season?
Cappelletti: He picks up that D-line every now and then. In this game (against the Packers), he was really getting a good push up the middle and made it difficult for (Matt) Flynn to step up in the pocket. With the rush coming from the edge, the quarterback is supposed to step up into that pocket, but Wilfork was very instrumental in pushing the interior part of that line back into Flynn's face. They move him all over and to defensive end. He was taking care of things nicely, playing a two-gap, going in one gap or the other and trying to find his way in there. He's been a solid performer for them.

PFW: How impressed have you been with CB Devin McCourty?
Cappelletti: He certainly has been able to stay with receivers longer and tighter than what you might expect from a rookie. He's making a good read on what pattern is being run. He shows a knack for the ball, turns around and finds the ball, which is all good. He is very much in tune to what their breaks and cuts are and he reacts to it quickly.

PFW: Why are the Patriots so good in the snow?
Cappelletti: They are taught, and they have accepted it, that they're not playing the weather but they're playing the Bills this week, like they played the Bears two weeks ago. That's the opponent, not the weather. Bill (Belichick) has been able to get through to them on that. They just ignore the weather and play the game. Tom Brady throws the ball as well as anyone in bad weather because he doesn't think about it. He's not losing the handle. He's throwing passes the way they have to be thrown for a reception to be made. He's an excellent pass thrower and he doesn't let the weather affect him. Somewhere along the line, winds could affect it, but (Brady) doesn't make any allowances for it; he plays like it's normal conditions.

Three Week 16 games blacked out

Three games in Week 16 will be blacked out on local television. The Bengals-Chargers game in Cincinnati, Buccaneers-Seahawks game in Tampa and Raiders-Colts game in Oakland all failed to sell out the required amount of tickets to avoid a blackout by Thursday's deadline.

This will be the 3-11 Bengals' fourth consecutive home game blacked out. They won their first game since Week Two last Sunday against the Browns. Earlier this season their 57-game sellout streak came to an end.

The turnaround Bucs have fading playoff hopes after an overtime loss last Sunday to the Lions, while the Seahawks are still alive in the NFC West.

The 7-7 Raiders are clinging to playoff hopes, and the Colts are playing for the AFC South crown. The three blackouts bring the 2010 total to 23. There were 22 blackouts in 2009.

Calipari ejected as Kentucky rolls 85-60

In a game that made a mockery of this supposedly being the most wonderful time of the year, Kentucky sloshed to an 85-60 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night.

The most interesting moment came when UK Coach John Calipari received two technical fouls and an automatic ejection. That marked what was believed to be the first ejection of a UK coach since referee Andre Pattillo threw out Rick Pitino from the 1996-97 regular-season finale in Rupp Arena.

Calipari's premature exit came with less than seven minutes left in a game that made the hymn Silent Night seem rollicking.

The first technical came with 6:44 left. Moments earlier, a UK player had driven the baseline and seemingly got knocked off balance as he shot. There was no foul called.

Calipari stared at referee Mike Stuart, who stood across the court, as Mississippi Valley State's Kevin Burwell made one of two technical fouls.

Three-and-out with Bears ORT J?Marcus Webb

Bears seventh-round pick J'Marcus Webb appears to be settling in at right tackle with 10 consecutive starts at the position under his belt, but he's still navigating through the challenges that come with being a rookie. While the worst for Chicago's offensive line appears to be in the past, Webb has taken his share of criticism for Chicago's struggles up front. We caught up Webb earlier this week to get his take on how he has developed during the season and what he thinks of the Jets' defense.

PFW: Compared to where things were at the beginning of the season, do you notice a difference in your play now when you watch yourself on tape?

Webb: (Offensive line coach Mike) Tice has us pick a few things every week to work on. Every week I feel like I have done that. I feel confident in my play. I don't think I'm still the same guy I was first coming in. I'm coming off the ball a little more and eliminating the mental errors.

PFW: Tice said recently that he thinks you get undue heat. Do you agree with him on that?

Webb: Of course. A lot of times media and also fans don't see the big picture. They don't see what we see on the field. Things may get misconstrued, but ultimately we're doing good. … (Criticism) makes you want to compete a little bit more and puts a little edge on you. It gets me fired up personally.

PFW: What's you impression of the Jets' front seven?

Webb: They like to throw a lot of different defensive fronts at you and try to attack you with confusion, but the guys aren't too big, so we should be able to hold up pretty good.

Cal: No contact about being Dominican coach

John Calipari distanced himself from blog speculation that he could be approached to coach the Dominican Republic national team.

The speculation began after Louisville Coach Rick Pitino got into serious discussions about coaching the Puerto Rican national team. Pitino ultimately accepted the job.

Calipari told reporters Tuesday that he had not been approached about coaching the Dominican Republic team. He stopped short of ruling out interest in the job, saying that coaching any national team would be an honor.

More than once in his two seasons as Kentucky coach, Calipari has lamented how summer recruiting intrudes on time he could spend with his family. When a reporter noted that coaching a national team would similarly take away family time, Calipari said, "You have a good point."

UK notebook: Mississippi State loads early schedule for suspensions

That Mississippi Valley State begins this season with 14 straight away games catches the eye, but it can be greeted with a yawn. Sean Woods' Delta Devils fit the crazy-schedule profile. So-called mid-major programs need the money that comes with guarantee games, so they embrace a philosophy of anything — almost literally anything — for a buck. They hope the on-court shellackings can toughen the team for conference play.

For Mississippi State, or any school in a BCS conference, to play a crazy schedule comes as a surprise.

How's this for crazy? The Bulldogs played East Tennessee State on Dec. 11, then North Carolina A&T on Dec. 12, then Nicholls State on Dec. 13, then Alabama State on Dec. 14 and then an exhibition against Belhaven on Dec. 15.

That's five games on five consecutive nights, if you're scoring at home. And just to gin up the crazy quotient, the exhibition on the fifth night was played more than 100 miles from campus in Jackson, Miss.

After what surely was an unprecedented stretch for any college team, Mississippi State left Starkville on Thursday for a two-week road trip that called for games in the Bahamas, Honolulu and Las Vegas.

Vikings MVP Meter: Week 15

Let's see how the Vikings' team MVP candidates for the season shape up following their 40-14 loss to the Vikings Monday night.

1. RB Adrian Peterson: You can't fault Peterson for missing Monday's game with a thigh bruise (not to mention his knee and ankle issues), and it was clear just how valuable he is by not being out there. Nothing against Toby Gerhart, who put in a fine effort, but Peterson has been the one consistent weapon all season. And yet, shutting him down if he can't play Sunday seems like the way to go.

2. CB Antoine Winfield: It's time to recognize just how good Winfield has been — and by contrast just how bad the other corners have been. Winfield rarely gets tested, but when he does he's not snoozing. In the handful of attempts Monday when the Bears threw his way, Winfield mostly held his own with only one real slip-up on a pass to Bears WR Earl Bennett. Winfield also is a big run supporter and has been consistently good at that for a decade now.

3. WR-KR Percy Harvin: I almost put Sidney Rice on this list, and really, you could make the case that in a handful of games, he has been one of the few difference makers. But in order to be smarter about it, I just slid down Harvin from his No. 2 position. Injuries have hurt him all season long, and the migraines just might be one of those things we talk about throughout his career. But all you needed to do was watch his 23-yard TD and a couple of hard hits he took after catches to see how special he is. Sure, Harvin had a false start and a few drops Monday. But everyone was awful. He's a dangerous threat when he's on the field and has been one of the Vikings' five best players this season, for what that's worth.

4. LB Chad Greenway: The legend has fallen off a little the past few weeks, not that there has been an inordinate amount of defensive help around him. It's just that after his monster start, in which he was making more than 10 tackles per game for about the first two months of the season, Greenway has fallen a little silent. Again, though, the body of work speaks volumes. That, and the fact that few others have stepped up.

5. OLT Bryant McKinnie: His attrocious game Monday coupled with E.J. Henderson's solid performance against the Bears almost made me flip-flop those two. But I just couldn't. I know McKinnie was schooled by an unknown rookie (Corey Wootton) whose hit likely ended a Hall of Famer's career (uh, that would be Brett Favre). And maybe it's just me, but I think McKinnie has been surprisingly solid this season. Maybe part of it was because of how poorly he played last season and the fact I thought he might have been done as any kind of front-line starter, but McKinnie has turned in a B-minus performance in 2010. This season, that's plenty high enough to get you into the Vikings' top five.

Cardinals could have plenty of QB options

Our sources in the desert told us before his first pro start in Week 14 that they didn't think there was anything John Skelton would do the rest of the season to keep the Cardinals from making a new starting quarterback for next season their top priority.

The fifth-round rookie out of Fordham, who has been compared by some observers to the Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger, displayed some intriguing flashes in his pro debut in the Cardinals' 43-13 victory over the Broncos.

But there wasn't anything intriguing about Skelton's shaky losing effort one week later matched up against Carolina's Jimmy Clausen, a major work in progress in his own right.

"I think the Roethlisberger comparisons are because of his size (6-5, 244 pounds) and strong arm, and he's shown that he's pretty good moving around in the pocket," said one team insider of Skelton, who missed his share of wide-open receivers against Carolina.

"But as far as reading defenses and really understanding the offense, he still has a long way to go."

Which brings up the question everybody has been asking for weeks now in Arizona: With Derek Anderson considered as good as gone after this season and Skelton shaping up as a backup for probably a couple more seasons, who will be the Cardinals' starting QB in 2011?

"I look for them to flood the position with both a veteran addition via free agency or trade and a high pick in the draft," the insider said. "The team isn't saying much at all — aside from being consistent about their lack of interest in Donovan McNabb."

Word is the veteran that has probably been mentioned the most behind the scenes is Marc Bulger, who is currently backing up Joe Flacco in Baltimore. On the street, three other increasingly popular names are Carson Palmer and Matt Hasselbeck, who are considered by many to be expendable in Cincinnati and Seattle, respectively, and — probably the sexiest possibility — the Eagles' Kevin Kolb, for whom the Cardinals would have to likely make a trade.

"I don't know about a Kolb trade," the insider said. "They would probably have to give up a lot of draft picks for him, and with the team having so many needs to fill, that might not go over real well."
