Danny Watkins, a former firefighter, landing in Philadelphia is just perfect. It's a high-character pick by a team that values such things. It's a high-value pick because you know what you are getting in the tough offensive lineman.
Does it concern you that Watkins is the same age as Kevin Kolb? It must be noted that the Eagles have done a lot of housecleaning of 30-something players the past few years. But Watkins has been extremely durable in his football career and could be a factor at one of three positions — tackle, guard or center.
When I talked to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg after the season, the first thing he said the offense needed to improve is pass protection. Some of that was on Mike Vick, but the line's performance dipped last season.
Andy Reid loves linemen, and he loves lunchpail linemen like Watkins. The kid will play any position the coaches want and will set a tone with his work ethic. People have complained that the Eagles do not run the ball enough, and though they still will be a 60-40 pass-run team, you can expect to see some third-and-1 rushes to go right behind Watkins' keister.
The Eagles are not done, folks. They are waiting to find out what is going to happen Friday morning with player trades, and Kolb is sure to be dealt when they can move him. The Cardinals have to be atop the list, and there is some evidence a deal might be in place already. The Eagles can find a quality cornerback or defensive linemen if the No. 38 pick is involved, with both Aaron Williams and Brandon Harris still on the board.
But as for Watkins, he has a lot of Logan Mankins in him, full of fire and brimstone, piss and vinegar. Eagles fans, trust me: You'll love the way he plays.
