On Monday, Mike Munchak was named the new head coach of the Titans. On Tuesday, Munchak made changes to his coaching staff.
Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger has been fired. The Titans finished 27th in the league in 2010 in offense.
Heimerdinger had been the team's coordinator the past three seasons, as well as from 2000-04. He was diagnosed with cancer in November but did not miss a game while privately going through chemotherapy. He previously had worked with Mike Shanahan as the Broncos' wide receivers coach.
"As it relates to Mike (Heimerdinger), I have a great deal of respect for him as a person and admiration for the way he is fighting against cancer. He is an innovative offensive mind and we have worked well through the years, but I believe we need to go in a different direction at offensive coordinator," Munchak said in a statement released by the Titans. "This wasn't about his health — he is feeling good — it is a change of direction for us. This is not something that I take lightly and I wish him and his family the best."
The Titans also announced they will not retain defensive assistant Rayna Stewart and offensive assistant Richie Wessman.
The way we see it
With Vince Young out at QB, the Titans' offense was already set to undergo some serious changes this offseason, and making a coordinator shift adds to that even more. It is expected that no matter who takes this job, RB Chris Johnson and WR Kenny Britt will be the focal points of the Tennessee attack, though it remains to be seen what direction the team will go.
Heimerdinger, despite his illness, could return to coaching in 2011. He interviewed for the Titans' head-coaching job when Jeff Fisher was let go and could join another team as an offensive assistant.
