Report: Packers, McCarthy close to contract extension

In Green Bay, Super Bowl-winning head coaches have streets named after them. They also receive new contracts.

Mike McCarthy is set to reap both of those rewards, the latter coming quite soon. According to a report from PFW Packers correspondent Bob McGinn in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are close to signing their head coach to a three-year contract extension.

The deal reportedly would make McCarthy one of the 10 highest-paid coaches in the NFL, upping his annual salary to nearly $5 million per year. McCarthy, 47, has two years remaining on a five-year deal that he had signed in January 2008 that pays him about $4 million annually. The new deal would keep keep him through the 2015 season.

In five seasons in Green Bay, McCarthy has a 48-32 regular-season record with three playoff appearances.

Last week, GM Ted Thompson signed a three-year extension that keeps him through the 2015 season.

The way we see it

After leading the Packers to a Super Bowl title despite all the injuries the team dealt with over the course of the season, McCarthy is due for a raise in salary. As the Journal Sentinel points out, it is slightly strange to give a coach a new deal when he still has two years remaining on his current one, but McCarthy has proven he is one of the best in the league and deserves the long-term job security.

With the pieces in place to be title contenders for the next few years, the Packers are wise to lock up the successful duo of Thompson and McCarthy. This should preserve continuity in decision making, both on and off the field, for the franchise.
