Titans WR Kenny Britt had felony charges against him downgraded to lesser offenses in New Jersey after a review by the prosecutor's office.
Britt was arrested on April 12 and charged with eluding a police officer, lying to an officer hindering apprehension and obstructing governmental function following a stop. Eluding an officer is a third-degree felony.
According to the report by PFW correspondent and Tennessean writer Jim Wyatt, Hudson County prosecutor Edward DeFazio said Britt faces three disorderly person charges in addition to motor vehicle charges, but no longer is charged with a felony.
"The case was sent for review to make sure [there's] nothing more to it," DeFazio said. "In this situation nobody was hurt and since he had no prior criminal record the matter was sent down to Bayonne Municipal Court.''
DeFazio maintained that the downgrade of the charges had nothing to do with Britt being a public figure.
This wasn't Britt's first brush with the law. He was involved in a bar fight last October, received a misdemeanor citation for driving on a revoked license last offseason and had theft-by-deception charges downgraded to a misdemeanor after not following through on a pledge to pay bail earlier this offseason.
Britt had 775 receiving yards on 42 catches with nine touchdowns in 12 games last season, his second in the NFL.
The way we see it
While it's important for Britt to have the felony charge dropped, he is still likely to face some kind of punishment from commissioner Roger Goodell when the lockout ends for violating the league's personal-conduct policy. Britt is a great talent on the field and could become one of the league's elite receivers if he stays out of trouble.
