Jets rookie DT Kenrick Ellis, whose trial date on a felony malicious wounding charge stemming from an April 2010 incident in Virginia has been continued to Nov. 28 after being slated for next Tuesday, is not a U.S. citizen, ESPNNewYork.com reported Friday.
Ellis, who was born in Jamaica, is a permanent resident, according to ESPNNewYork.com. A permanent resident, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), "is someone who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis."
According to Section 237 of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, a conviction on an aggravated felony charge is a "deportable" offense for a non-citizen.
Ellis, whom the Jets drafted in Round Three, was arrested after a fight with another man while a student at Hampton University.
"We did rigorous background on him. We've met with him, and based on all the information that we have, we were comfortable taking him," Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said after the club drafted Ellis.
