A three-game December losing streak has speculation about head coach Eric Mangini's future becoming the dominant story line surrounding the Browns as Cleveland prepares for its regular-season finale vs. Pittsburgh.
Team president Mike Holmgren wlll evaluate Mangini, who is 10-21 in two seasons in Cleveland, at season's end. On Monday, Mangini was asked if he was curious to know of Holmgren's thoughts about him.
"What did someone tell me one time? 'Don't worry about the future — it comes soon enough,' " Mangini said.
Added Mangini, "What I really want, what I really want, is to beat Pittsburgh. That's what I really want. I can't be more sincere than that. Pittsburgh is a huge game whether it's the first game against Pittsburgh or the second game against Pittsburgh, it's Pittsburgh, and that's what I want to do.
"... I want the guys to have a great week of practice and go out and thump, beat Pittsburgh."
We've heard Mangini's ability to stay focused during trying times is something that distinguishes him, and if ever there was a week for him to have tunnel vision, it was this one. With the Browns closing out their schedule and recording double-digit losses for a third consecutive season, the Browns' plans for 2011, and whether those include Mangini, are what's left to discuss.
