Whitehurst to start for Seattle in Week 17

Charlie Whitehurst has started only once in his five-year NFL career. Start No. 2 will come in one of the most important games of the entire 2010 season.

The Seahawks announced Monday that Whitehurst will start in Week 17 vs. the Rams. The winner of the matchup, which was flexed into prime time, will win the NFC West and host a wild-card playoff game.

Whitehurst has played in four games this season because of injuries to Matt Hasselbeck. Seattle's normal starter suffered a hip bruise in the Week 16 loss to Tampa Bay. Head coach Pete Carroll said that Hasselbeck may be able to play some in the game vs. St. Louis, but the team was more comfortable with Whitehurst starting.

On the season, Whitehurst has completed 35-of-63 passes for 315 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

The way we see it

The Seahawks are in a tough spot with their quarterbacks heading into this must-win game, as neither Whitehurst nor Hasselbeck has been very impressive. If they had a choice, they'd likely prefer the veteran to get the start, but the hip injury could limit his practice and preparation time. Whitehurst will need to play his best game of the season to help Seattle advance into the postseason.
