Brees played with MCL sprain in playoffs

Saints QB Drew Brees played with a low-grade sprain of a medial collateral ligament during the team's wild-card loss at Seattle, head coach Sean Payton revealed Monday, according to The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. Payton said Brees suffered the sprain earlier in the season but didn't specify when.

Payton, who was speaking with the media at Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Ala., declined to make any comparisons between Brees' injury and the one suffered by Bears QB Jay Cutler in the NFC title game, which has ignited so much controversy. Payton said there are many levels of severity with ligament injuries.

Payton also confirmed that Saints RB Pierre Thomas had undergone extensive arthroscopic surgery on his ankle and that his rehab will likely last well into the offseason. Fellow RB Chris Ivory had a screw inserted in his ankle during an operation and is reportedly doing well. WR Marcus Colston is expected to have arthroscopic procedures performed on his knee and wrist.

Saints secondary coach Dennis Allen has concluded interviews with the Broncos and Eagles, according to The Times-Picayune.
