Packers-Bears first-quarter reflections

The Packers started off like they were going to pull off a second-straight rout, effortlessly driving down the field on their first possession. Aaron Rodgers’ nifty back-door TD run, which was preceded by three passes of 20-plus yards (two by Greg Jennings, one by Jordy Nelson), gave the Packers a quick 7-0 lead at cold, windy Soldier Field.

But the Bears’ defense stiffened on the Packers’ last two possessions in the first quarter, as Green Bay finished the quarter up 7-0. The Bears’ defense started to apply more pressure with DE Julius Peppers picking on T.J. Lang, who had to replace the injured Chad Clifton.

Green Bay’s defense easily handled the Bears’ heavily run-oriented offense, with Cullen Jenkins in particular providing a strong inside pass rush. Brian Urlacher had a nice sack of Rodgers late in the quarter, which ended with a beautiful punt from Tim Masthay that landed inside the Bears’ five-yard line.
