In a shocking development, the Titans and head coach Jeff Fisher have decided to part ways, the team said in a press release Thursday. The story was first reported by Sports Illustrated's Don Banks.
What is not clear is whether Fisher is resigning, the Titans are firing him or whether it was a mutual decision. A press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT at Baptist Sports Park in Nashville.
Fisher received a statement of support from owner Bud Adams soon after the team announced it would part ways with QB Vince Young, and everything pointed toward Fisher coaching in 2011.
The report says that the two sides are negotiating the terms of Fisher's exit.
Fisher had been the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, taking over the then-Houston Oilers in the middle of the 1994 season. He survived the franchise's move to Tennessee, first to Memphis but settling in Nashville, their permanent home. Fisher led the Titans to the Super Bowl, losing in 2000 to the Rams in a classic, 23-16.
His regular-season record was 142-120 in his 16-plus seasons, but that mark fell to 5-6 in the playoffs. The Titans finished 6-10 this past season.
Although there are no clear reasons why Fisher won't be back, the report states that he was upset at losing two of his assistants — defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil, who was fired, and noted DL coach Jim Washburn, who left for the same position with the Eagles.
