GM Jeff Ireland has signed a multiyear extension with the Dolphins, the team announced Saturday morning, with owner Steve Ross saying that Ireland has management's "full support moving forward."
Ireland has been the team's general manager since the conclusion of the 2007 season. Starting with the selection of All-Pro OLT Jake Long with the top choice of the '08 draft, Ireland has rebuilt the Dolphins' roster since taking the job. Miami is 25-24 in three seasons with Ireland at the helm, including a playoff appearance in '08.
"The decision to extend Jeff's contract as our general manager was an easy one," Ross in a statement. "The young talent that Jeff has assembled during his three years with the Dolphins has made a profound impact on our franchise's recovery from the 1-15 season of 2007."
There had been speculation following a disappointing 7-9 season in 2010 that the Dolphins would make a coaching change. Instead, Ross and Ireland wound up giving head coach Tony Soprano a contract extension.
"I appreciate the support of the entire Dolphin organization, from Steve Ross all the way down, and I'm going to continue to work as hard as I can with Steve, Tony Sparano, and the rest of the team to bring the Dolphins back to their long-time position as one of the elite teams in the NFL," said Ireland. "We have a young and talented nucleus to build on, and as we continue to add quality players through all the means available to us, we will give our fans the type of team they deserve."
